Important Terms You Need to Know Before Buying Vinyl Windows

Windows are one of the most significant investments you can make for your home. They’re not an easy project to do on your own, either. Just like everything else in the world, it’s getting more complicated to understand everything important to know about vinyl windows. Before making a purchase, you’ll want to know important terms about vinyl replacement windows so you know how to make the best decision. Here are some of the more important terms to keep in mind:

R-Value: R-Value tells you how well the vinyl window you are considering acts as an insulator. The higher the R-value, the better the window acts as an insulator. Higher numbers are better, so look for the vinyl window with the highest R-Value.
U-Value: A U-Value describes how easily heat escapes through a vinyl window. The higher the value, the more easily heat escapes. You will want to purchase the vinyl window with the lowest U-Value.
Casement window: A casement window opens exactly like a door. Their advantages include that they are more difficult to break into, and they also catch funnel a breeze into your house.
Sash: The sash of a window describes the part of the window that moves. This term is used most commonly to describe double-hung windows, where one sash is positioned below another. Casement windows, which open after you turn a crank, can also be said to have a sash
DP rating: A DP rating refers to a window’s ability to resist high winds. If you live in an area where hurricanes are common, a DP rating of 50 will generally be able to survive the high winds offered by hurricanes.
Double hung: This type of window has both an upper and lower pane that each slide past one another. This compares to a single hung window, which only has a lower slash that slides vertically.
ENERGY STAR: The US Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy help Americans save money and conserve energy by helping them identify energy efficient products and practices. If you see the ENERGY STAR logo on a window, it can reduce your energy bills by up to 15%.
Insulated glass unit: Insulated glass has something other than a single pane of glass separating the inside of your home from the outdoors. In terms of different types of insulation provided, double or triple-paned units may be used, argon or krypton gas may be placed between multiple panes, or coatings may be applied to the glass itself.
Frame: This term describes the outermost structure that supports a window. Vinyl frames work well because they do not allow heat to pass through easily.

Now that you know more about vinyl replacement windows, you’ll be able to make a better decision when it comes time to make a purchase!
