FINDING TOP RATED WINDOWS IN MARYLAND

So you’re in the market for replacement windows? Now what? There are a million different kinds of windows; how do you know if you need single or double pane windows? And how do you decide between wood and vinyl? It’s no doubt that installing top rated windows can pay for themselves by saving you money each month on your utility bills. But the most important thing to look at when selecting new windows for your home is the energy efficiency. Don’t worry, the window style will not have a major impact on the efficiency rating.

Check Window Efficiency Ratings

ENERGY STAR windows are a great investment for your home. The efficiency rating is usually labeled on the window. When selecting top rated windows for your home, there are a few things you want to consider concerning the efficiency rating:

U-factor or U-value, ranges from 0.20 to 1.20. The lower the number, the better the window is at keeping heat inside your home.

Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) ranges from 0 to 1. The lower the number the better the window is at keeping unwanted heat from the sun from entering your home. In warmer climates, you want the lowest number you can find. In colder climates, you can help keep heat in your home by selecting windows with a higher SHGC rating.

Visible transmittance (VT) ranges from o to 1 and it measures how much visible light a window lets in. The higher the number, the more light the window lets in.

Gas fills usually consist of argon or krypton gas that is pumped in between the layers of each window. The gas improves insulation and heat transfer. Double pane windows have two layers of glass with one layer of gas in between.

The average home loses 30 percent of its heat or air-conditioning energy through its windows. Energy-efficient windows can save you money every month by reducing the amount of time you have to run your HVAC unit.

Pick the Right Window Installer

You can buy the best windows available, but if you choose a cheap window installer who cuts corners installing your new windows, you could risk losing all of its energy efficiency. Cracks or gaps in window frames can cause drafts and in turn cause your energy bills to go up.
